Moving/Relocating to India from USA

The Indian culture and lifestyle is very different from that of the United States. Planning a move to India is a great idea, provided you know what you are doing, and have everything under control. For this, you need to have a checklist of the things you wish to take along, taking care of your accommodation needs in the foreign country, and figuring out your employment before officially moving there. There is nothing worse than an unplanned relocation to an alien country.

Few Considerations Before Moving

Best Time to Move

Some of the cities in India experience heavy rainfall where the streets get flooded. If you are planning a move to one of the cities, it is best to delay your move until the monsoon season is over, otherwise you will have to experience flooded streets.

Things to Move

You should know that you get almost everything in India. The quality of these things might be slightly different from what you are used to in the United States though, so you might want to consider bringing along with you things you would not want to get from there.

Managing Expectations

You should know that India is not as developed as the United States. There is a lot of poverty in the country, and despite sufficient progress, you will still need to be aware of the country’s overall living standards. India is far less expensive than the United States, and there is excessive availability of cheap labor to help you through your various daily tasks. Most of the things in the country cost low amounts of money such as entertainment, housing, education, and food.

Hindi is the official language of the country, although English is spoken widely as well. Therefore, if you do not know Hindi, you can still get by. It is recommended, however, that you learn at least some basic Hindi words to communicate more effectively.

You should also be aware of the voltage and power issues in India. There will be frequent power and voltage cuts, and in order to avoid damage to your appliances in the process, you can purchase voltage stabilizers and UPS. Also, majority of the houses there do not have an oven, but you can purchase ovens from electronic shops.

The people in India are extremely friendly and helpful, and will go out of their way to help you out. If in case they are unable to help you, they will still never out rightly say no to you, but subtly tell you that they cannot. If you are someone who loves meeting and interacting with new people, then India will make you really happy.

India is a beautiful and a diverse country. The people there are really friendly and accommodating, and you should have no trouble adjusting to this new location, provided you do a little background study on the country before moving. Visiting India for a few days is one thing, but moving there permanently or for a longer duration, is a totally different scenario.
